Here at The Design Thinking Agency, we’ve had the privilege of working with many businesses that are just starting up and don’t have many materials for us to work with. Although we always recommend getting professional photographs to really capture the personal character of their business, sometimes it’s just not possible. So, what is the next best option? Stock photos.
The world of stock photos is full of great professional shots that can be used as is or slightly modified to fit the business’s needs. On the other hand, there are also many poor photos that somehow make their way onto people’s work. Let’s put ourselves in a few situations and see what should and shouldn’t be used when putting together advertising pieces.
Picture this…
You’re a local mechanic who has opened up a new garage and is looking to establish yourself as a reputable business in the community.

You’ve started an online pet store and are in need of a hero shot to capture the lifestyle of your clients.
The good:
Here’s a bright and vibrant shot of a dog that’s living in the moment and loving every second of it.
The bad:
First of all, is this dog even real? If this photo had a subtitle it would probably be… [Whispering] “Help me.”
